Number 99. Established 1883 Roswell New Mexico, Tuesday, July 8, 1947 5c Per Copy RAAF Captures Flying Saucer On Ranch in Roswell Region No Details of Flying Disk Are Revealed Roswell Hardware Man and Wife Report Disk Seen The intelligence office of the 509th Bombardment group at Roswell Army Air Field announced at noon today, that the field has come into possession of a flying saucer. According to information released by the department, over authority of Maj. J. A. Marcel, intelligence officer, the disk was recovered on a ranch in the Roswell vicinity, after an unidentified racher had notified Sheriff Geo. Wilcox, here, that he had found the instrument on his premises. Marjor Marcel and a detail from his department went to the ranch and recovered the disk, it was stated. After the intelligence office here had inspected the instrument it was flown to "higher headquarters." The intelligence office stated that no details of the saucer's construction or its appearance had been revealed. Mr. and Mrs. Dan Wilmot apparently were the only persons in Roswell who have seen what they thought was a flying disk. They were sitting on their porch at 105 South Penn. last Wednesday night at about ten minutes before ten o'clock when a large glowing object zoomed out of the sky from the southeast, going in a northwesterly direction at a high rate of speed. Wilmot called Mrs. Wilmot's attention to it and both ran down into the yard to watch. It was in sight less than a minute, perhaps 40 or 50 seconds, Wilmot estimated. Wilmot said that it appeared to him to be about 1,500 feet high and going fast. He estimated between 400 and 500 miles per hour. In appearance it looked oval in shape like two inverted saucers faced mouth to mouth, or like two old type washbowls placed together in the same fashion. The entire body glowed as though light were showing through from the inside, though not like it would be if a light were merely underneath. From where he stood Wilmot said that the object looked to be about 5 feet in size, and making allowance for the distance it was from town he figured that it must have been 15 or 20 feet in diameter, though this was just a guess. Wilmot said that he heard no sound but that Mrs. Wilmot said she heard a swishing sound for a very short time. The object came into view from the southeast and disappeared over the treetops in the general vicinity of six-mile hill. Wilmot, who is one of the most respected and reliable citizens in twon, kept the story to himself hoping that someone else would come out and tell about having seen one, but finally today decided that he would go ahead and tell about seeing it. The announcement that the RAAF was in possession of one came only a few minutes after he had decided to release the details of what he had seen. ----------O---------- Roswellians Have Differing Opinions On Flying Saucers Roswell is a bit uncertain about these flying disks, it would appear from interviews today with a number of local citizens, with about as many ideas concerning them as there are people interviewed. The reactions ran the gamut from scoffs at the whole idea to serious thoughts that they represented experiments by the government. No one interviewed thought they cam from souces outside the United States. Representative thoughts were about as follows: Dr. A.D. Crile:- An obsession. I think it is a fixed curiosity. The condition of the eyes is such that some people think they see them when they look up into the sky, but others without the same deficiency do not see them. It is just an obsession; there is no such thing at all. Ben Ginsberg:- I am satisfied it is not an illusion. I feel there is some foundation for it. It is not reasonable to suppose it would be enemy disks. My frank opinion is that it is an experiment and as quickly as they find one - which they soon will - the disks will be exposed as experiments by some individual or by our own government. H.M. Dow:- I have come to the conclusion that there are some disks flying around, and I think it is an experiment of some tactical branch of our armed forces. W.W. Merritt:- I think most of them are optical illusions. If it is anything at all it is something of the army's, but I don't think there is a thing to it myself. Rolla Hinkle:- I think the United States government is trying out something new. These disks may be radio-controlled instruments of some kind. In fact, I would make a guess that it is some military division of the government trying out radio-controlled objects flying through the air, possibly at super-sonic speeds. Ross Malone Jr:- I am still not convinced but that they are (Continued To Page Four) -------------------- Roswellians- (Continued from Page One) mass hysteria. If they keep increasing the reports and if the reports become more authentic I may have to revise my opinion later. But I am not going to revise it yet. Claude Simpson:- I think undoubtably there is something to it but there is a lot of hooey to it too. Some people are seeing them when they really don't exist, but there must be something to it. I have no idea what they are. George Balderee:- Personally, I think it is some experiment of our war agencies. I don't think it is anything to be alarmed over, because I think it is some experiment being carried on by our own people. Tom Hall:- I am as much at sea as everyone else. I think it is a scientific experiment emanating from some source, where I do not know. But I do not think it is iur own country. Walter Harrison:- I don't have the least idea on earth what it is. I haven't seen one and don't know anything about them except what I have read. It seems strange to me that if there are as many as have been reported that they arn't hitting something. Bruce Poorbaugh:- I enjoy reading the stories about them. I believe it is an army or scientific experiment. Wayne Adams:- There must be something to it or it would not be observed by so many people in so many areas. It is more likely that it is some solar phenomenon than experimental work by some enemy nation. If they are man made and as big as a house as some reports have it, someone should be able to find one. Dan Wilmot:- I think it is evidently a radar-conrolled defense instrument of some kind which is being experimented with, and I think the atomic commission knows about it. Will C. Lawrence:- I think this is some test the government is making. If it wern't the government, they would already have run this down and let the public know what it is all about. ----------O---------- ****** From: The Sunday Times newspaper. Date: Sunday 19th May, 1996. GIANT INFLATABLE TO UNFURL IN SPACE ORBIT Nasa is due to launch its latest shuttle mission today to test an inflatable antenna the size of a tennis court. Endeavour and its six-man crew are due to lift off from Kennedy Space Centre at 10:30 (GMT). Tomorrow will be the highlite of the 10-day mission when the astronauts release a small satellite carrying a prototype inflatable communications antenna. Once inflated, the antenna will fly alongside the shuttle for one orbit of the Earth. Nasa hopes to use inflatable structures not just for antenna, but for all kinds of space structures, including sun shades, and support booms because they are lighter, smaller and more cost-effective than traditional systems. As well as six astronauts, Endeavour carries mussel larvae, sea-urchin eggs and starfish embryos. Scientists hope that by studying marine life in space they will learn more about the causes of human bone disorders and birth defects. ****** From: Teletext. Date: Sunday 19th May, 1996. "THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE" A postal worker claims he has had a close encounter after two giant UFOs were spotted hovering over Burton in the latest of a string of sightings in the area. Mr Tom Cullerton has told how he lost 15 minutes of his life. He said he watched a craft "the size of a football pitch" gliding over homes in Winshill and had another dramatic sighting two nights later. Now he wants to know whether any other people spotted the UFOs during the early hours of Wednesday and Friday last week. UFO investigators say this was the latest of around 20 "flying triangle" sightings in the Burton and South Derbyshire area in the last month. Mr Culleton has been a postal worker for nearly 30 years and is Derbyshire area health and safety representative for the Communications Workers' Union, which covers Burton. He says he was travelling along the A50 during the early hours of May 1 to collect mail from Burton when he spotted a bright light in the sky. He stopped alongside Bretby Lane, and then saw "a great craft with lights all round it" gliding slowly over houses. "It was like the body of a very large aircraft without wings, about 100 yards across. There were lights all round it, with windows at the side and a light at the rear was traffic light green. "I'm a sceptic and not interested in UFOs. But I saw what I saw and that's it," said Mr Culleton. He said he later realised he had lost a quarter of an hour, which he could not account for. He says the second sighting happened near the Waterloo pub further down the road. He saw a massive triangular craft the length of a football pitch move towards him and bank to the left. Mr Culleton says his second sighting was similar to the picture produced by the Derby-based Phenomenon Research Association, a worldwide organisation of around 70 members who have been investigating UFOs. The case is now being investigated by the Association which says hundreds of "flying triangles" have been spotted all over the world since 1955. Anyone who feels they may have seen one can contact group leader Mr Omar Fowler on 01332 761464. ****** From: "Terry Colvin" Date: Tuesday, 14th May, 1996. ICBM SITES VISITED BY UFOs While chewing the fat today at a defense lecture I learned that UFOs are continuing to visit ICBM and other sensitive military sites. Rick S. said a friend at Kirtland Air Force Base (Albuquerque), New Mexico stated two UFOs were tracked on radar at the Distant Early Warning (DEW) site near Cavalier, North Dakota. The objects approached slowly, decelerated to 0 angular speed, instantly accelerated to Mach 4, reversed direction on a dime, etc. Interceptors sent up could not close. Also, a defense official related his father's UFO sighting and stories by a navigator on B-17s based in England. The latter concerned foo-fighters that routinely met outbound B-17s on runs to Germany and inbound on return. ****** From: Daily Mail newspaper. Date: Thursday May 23rd, 1996. (letters page) In good weather, away from streetlights and large cities, you can get a good view of the stars from most places on Earth. Better on a moonless night, the view is generally improved the higher above sea level. The most popular location with professional astronomers is the island of Hawaii in mid-pacific. Its 14,000 ft high extinct volcano Mauna Kea is an excellent site and observatories from half-a-dozen countries, including the UK, grace its slopes. Other good locations are the Chilean Andes, La Palma in the Canary Islands, up mountains in Arizona, U.S., and Sliding Spring in New South Wales, Australia. REQUEST FROM ORTK I was watching a crappy program on TV here in Ireland about home movies. It shows ancient home movies made by silly rich and famous people. This week featured home movies by a guy called Desmond Leslie, from Castle Leslie. He generally hung around with people like Mick Jagger. Anyway he was talking about the sixties in general and then casually mentioned watching the Apollo 11 moon shot from a pub in Connamara, and how there were two hugh UFO's in the picture, one above the module and the other behind the module. He then just carried on talking about the sixties......... I spoke to an ageing hippy neighbour of mine who told me of this same incident some time ago, I asked him tell me the positions of the UFO's and he described them exactly as Desmond Leslie did. Anyone got any more info on this??? I would appreciate any pointers etc. ****** From: (Doug Roberts) lgmnews@nolimits.demon.co.uk Source: The Observer newspaper. Date: April 28, 1996. E.T. WAS HERE, SAYS MoD MAN BYLINE: Ron Mckay IT'S OFFICIAL - there are aliens out there and they have been visiting Earth for years, breaching air defences and endangering national security. At least this is the belief of a Ministry of Defence official who has investigated more than 600 alleged UFO sightings and had access to all the top-secret departmental files over 40 years. Nick Pope, a 30-year-old civil servant, was in charge of the MoD's X-Files section - prosaically titled Secretariat (Air Staff) 2a - which handles inquiries into unexplained air phenomena. He arrived in 1991 as a sceptic and left three years later convinced. Mr Pope still works for the Ministry, which stresses that his opinions are his own and are not shared in Whitehall, where the official view is that while we are open-minded about the possible presence of others in our galaxy, there is no proof they have been parking their spaceships on our lawns. Mr Pope has a book coming out in June based on his MoD experiences, Open Skies, Closed Minds, but when the Observer rang him at his desk in Whitehall he was decidedly close-mouthed. 'It's in my interest that the news interest manifests itself when there is a book on the shelf,' he said. He did confirm that he now believed in extraterrestrial visitations and that direct experience of investigating sightings had convinced him. However, the author has been less guarded elsewhere. He spoke at a conference in London last weekend organised by Fortean Times magazine, and even has his own space on the Internet, where he reveals that his departmentalcolleagues have nicknamed him 'Spooky', the same as Fox Mulder's in the X-Files. 'The official reason why the MoD looks at UFO reports is simply to see whether there is evidence of any threat to the defence of the UK,' he says. 'But how can anybody say there's no threat if they don't know what UFOs are?' Stressing this point to his superiors allowed him to 'investigate UFO sightings and handle policy in this area'. Speaking at the London 'Unconvention' conference, Mr Pope said he had dealt with more than 200 sightings a year and, during his spell at the department, found around 80 that could not be explained. He believes Britain's most famous alleged sighting, on a December night in 1980 in Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk, was compelling evidence of visitors from outer space. American airmen from two nearby RAF bases described an object the size of a tank, triangular with three legs and made out of what looked like black glass, which rose slowly upwards, hovered briefly and then shot off at incredible speed. His book has been vetted by the men from the Ministry ('We're quite relaxed about it,' said a spokesman). But he stressed Mr Pope's job had been purely administrative: 'It was not his job to investigate. I am not aware that our air defence system has ever been penetrated.' Nonsense, says Mr Pope. 'Not only is the truth out there,' he says 'but it is much stranger than fiction.' ****** From: (Doug Roberts) lgmnews@nolimits.demon.co.uk Source: Sunday Mail newspaper. Date: May 5th, 1996. MY NIGHT OF FRIGHT: CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE VIDEO KIND Margaret Ross from Stenhousemuir has video footage of the UFO she saw. BYLINE: Paul Drury. Granny Margaret Ross feared she was about to be beamed up by ALIENS... After a close encounter - IN HER BEDROOM. "I was so scared, I hid behind the curtain," said Margaret. "I was sure they were looking at me." Margaret, 63, survived unscathed... with astonishing video footage of a UFO. Her film, exclusively obtained by the Mail, shows a bright light hovering in the sky above her house in Stenhousemuir. The area is world-famous as a hot spot for UFO sightings. Brighter than a star, the object appears suddenly to zoom towards Margaret's camcorder. The disc-shaped UFO shows five clear stripes on the surface. Then it shoots away. Husband Alex, 72, said: "It wasn't just the camera that picked it up. I saw it too." The couple's terror began as they were preparing to go to bed. "I had just put the TV off when I looked out of the window," said Margaret. "I looked up to the sky and thought: 'What is that?' "I came downstairs for my camcorder because I could not believe what I saw." Margaret, takes her camcorder everywhere and she filmed the UFO for 20 minutes. Just a week before, a resident of a nearby village told police she had seen a "strange light in the sky". We gave Margaret's film to Archie Roy, Glasgow University's Emeritus Professor of Physics and Astronomy. And the prof was astonished by the video. He said: "I've never seen anything like this before." "Around 92 per cent of sightings can be easily explained. "But this one is one of the 8 per cent of phenomenon which science cannot recognise. "I have seen things like this before... but not changing shape the way this does." Is it the Devil? UFOs are being sent to Earth by the Devil, says Father Tom Kulp, one of America's experts on the supernatural. And UFOs figure in Biblical prophecies about the end of the world, he claims. Father Kulp has studied similarities between demons and aliens. The Greek Orthodox cleric, who is based in Wisconsin, points out that today's reports of encounters with alien beings are almost identical to many ancient accounts of demonic possession. He says: "The ultimate purpose of the UFO phenomenon is to help prepare the human race for the coming of the Antichrist, as foretold in the Bible." ****** From: choppie@skinner.u-net.com Newsgroups: alt.ufo.reports Date: Saturday 13th April, 1996. UFO SIGHTING IN LIVERPOOL Hi All, I am sending you a report of a UFO that a friend saw early this morning. In the early morning of April 5th, I was walking home after visiting my friend, and I noticed a flash in the sky to my right. It appeared to be a triangular shaped object moving at great speed, as it crossed from one end of my field of vision to the other in 2-3 seconds. I did however see the object blink a light twice before it vanished, yet I did notice that it had no observation lights of any kind. I have no idea how for away it was or how large it was, but I was forced to look up at a 45 degree angle to view it. ****** From: Iain Bryson From: Source: Sunday Life newspaper. Several people in South Armagh and Omeath have reported seeing a large circular ball of light in the evening sky. At the same time the UFO research group QUEST was contacted by a farmer in Carnlough who reported the mutilation of one of his cows. Miles Johnston from Quest said: "The cow carcass had been drained of blood, the flesh had been removed from its head and its vital organs were gone. "The organs were sucked out through a clean incision made by some hi-tech laser device. "This is the first case of its kind in Northern Ireland but it has happened to thousands of animals in the US and Britain." ****** Dave.
